Last week on American Idol, the top 10 boys and girls performed, Steven Tyler teased Jennifer Lopez about a wardrobe malfunction and Randy Jackson said the word “yo” approximately 322 times. All jokes aside, J.Lo looked fab as usual and her haircolor made our hearts swoon. Want to recreate the look on clients begging for her balayage? Welcome to the stage Doug Macintosh, Color Director at John Sahag Workshop. “This shade bridges the gap between blonde and brunette,” he shares, “so it’s an appealing look for a lot of women.” To get the look on a Natural Level 5 client, flash lighten the base with Wella Koleston Perfect 10/1 + 30-volume then rinse, shampoo, condition and dry the hair. Next, foil in Clairol BW2 Powder Bleach + 20-volume, starting at the ears and working up, creating fairly large weaves in the foils. Work through the top and crown areas. Process to a pale blonde; remove the foils, shampoo, rinse and towel dry. Apply Redken Shades EQ 1 oz. Clear + 1 oz. 09NB + 2 oz. SEQ Processing Solution at the sink, process 5 minutes and rinse. Get another color formula and how-to for Jennifer’s balayage!

When a client is in the mood for a new style, where’s the first place she turns to for inspiration? The pages of US Weekly and Elle or the E! channel, since celebrity style determines just about every fashion decision your clients make. This gorgeous fall cut, as seen on Dianna Agron and January Jones—which we like to call the “shab”—will have your client looking hot as the temperatures cool. It’s a cross between a bob and shag and it truly comes to life when cut and styled properly. Monte Haute, hair department head for Glee, created this look on Dianna using a razor to shape the outline of the cut. “It’s meant to have some jagged lines with lots of movement,” he explains. After the initial shape was finished, Monte used shears to add extra detail, like the piece-y fringe and feature-enhancing layered side pieces. “It’s a great option for women with fine hair that has a little bit of natural texture,” Monte says. He finished the style with Bumble and bumble Defrizz to control flyaways and provide tons of shine. Find out 4 more favorite haircuts for fall!

Michelle Obama is quite the trend-setter. She catapulted designer Jason Wu into instant celeb status when she wore his gown to the Inaugural Ball; her arms inspired women everywhere to work out again; and she’s also convinced the world that short layered hair is super chic. Want to create the iconic “Obama” cut on your client? The pros at Mizani say to take a vertical parting at the center nape, hold it at 45-degrees and cut. Work side-to-side and cut with a traveling guide then move up and repeat throughout the entire back. Move to the side and part off a 1-inch horizontal section. Hold it at zero elevation, blending with a portion of the previously-established length guide in back and then point-cut the entire section to establish the side length. Then take a diagonal section at the fringe and point cut to establish the length. Return to the side and work up, taking vertical subsections and cutting to a traveling guide. Repeat steps 2-4 on the opposite side then personalize the fringe with point-cutting. To finish the style, work a pea-sized amount of Mizani Supreme Oil through the hair then blow-dry with a round brush.
