Long-locked ladies like Maya Rudolph, Stacy Keibler and Kelly Osbourne were beside themselves (hah!) at the Oscars, opting for stunning side-swept waves and curls. With its popularity on the red carpet, this over-the-shoulder look is sure to be a hit come bridal and prom season because it’s a great way to show off a gown while still making a strong beauty statement. To create this Oscar-worthy wave, apply a styling cream to damp hair from roots to ends. Blowdry the hair with a round brush to ensure a smooth, polished finish. Once the hair is completely dry, create a deep side part. Starting at the back of the head, use a styling iron like the domed FHI Heat Platform Iron to twist sections of hair all in one direction. Pull all the curled hair over the shoulder opposite from the deep side part to complete the modern yet Old Hollywood glam style. Check out the Platform series irons from FHI Heat!

Think there are no glamorous styling options for your short-haired clients? Think again! For the Golden Globes, Marcus Francis of the Wall Group styled starlet Evan Rachel Wood’s crop into an artfully sculpted, classic Hollywood ‘do with just the right amount of edge, turning her into a bonafide red carpet hottie. To create her look, he sprayed Phyto Phytovolume Actif from roots to ends on wet hair. Next, he blow-dried her hair away from her face, using his hands to work in the product and build thick, movable texture. For a little more hold, he cocktailed the Phyto spray with Living Proof Full Thickening Mousse and applied it to the entire head, blow-drying with a ½-inch round bristle brush. Using a ¾-inch curling iron, Marcus wrapped medium-size sections on the top of the head to set in the volume, creating a little bend at the ends. He then brushed back the top and molded the shape, connecting hair at the sides and back while keeping the volume in the front. He applied Davines Glossy Modeling Putty to his fingers and raked back the sides of the hair and added polish to the back, pinching horizontal sections with the putty to add texture and tighten the sides. Marcus then finished the ‘do with Oribe Superfine Hair Spray. Get 11 more how-tos from the Golden Globes! -
A Nod to the Past

One thing we absolutely love about award season is seeing what trends are gracing the red carpet, and we couldn’t help but notice how stunning Parks and Recreations star Aubrey Plaza looked with her 1940s-inspired waves. Hairstylist David Gardner was responsible for creating her old Hollywood, glamourous look. Inspired by her gorgeous dress and Golden Era starlets like Marlene Dietrich and Carole Lombard, David first applied styling mousse to her damp hair. He then dried her hair most of the way using his fingers, then switched to a round brush at the top and sides of her hair to add volume and to keep it smooth around her face for a more contemporary feel. Once the hair was completely dry, he curled sections in tight corkscrews on a 1-inch iron from root to the tip, leaving the ends straight. Once all the hair was curled and completely cooled, he raked his fingers through to break up the curls. He then styled the front over her eye and applied a shine-enhancing hairspray to lock in the look and keep the hair looking radiant and reflective throughout the evening. Get more Emmy how-tos! -

There’s only one red carpet where a tri-colored beehive, pink hair, an outfit made of stuffed animals and Lady Gaga dressed in full male character isn’t too far from the norm—and that’s at the MTV VMAs! Pop stars came out in full force Sunday night for the big show and the names on everybody’s lips were Katy Perry and Beyoncé. Katy ruled the red carpet with her candy-colored locks fashioned into gorgeous, ‘40s-inspired waves for a new take on an old-Hollywood style that coordinated perfectly with each of her three costume changes. Beyoncé was glowing—not just from perfectly-placed highlights and fabulous contouring—but because she and hubby Jay-Z announced they’re expecting their first child! In true mommy-to-be fashion, Bey kept her look understated but fabulous with a wavy, side-swept ponytail and gorgeous ombré haircolor. What was your favorite look from the VMAs and why? Effortless Twist
Boho braids are hot for summer, and Blake Lively is here as proof. She sported this fun, textured version on the red carpet for the premiere of Green Lantern recently and it complemented her summery Chanel Haute Couture dress perfectly. To create the look, Blake’s stylist Rod Ortega started by applying Philip B Beach Mist and Shu Uemura Silk Mesh on Blake’s wet hair. Next, he dried her hair with a diffuser to get a beach-wave texture, then curled random strands of hair with a ½-inch curling iron and pinned her hair to the side. Rod gave the look a boho-chic finish by fishtail-braiding part of her hair and gave it an all-over sheen with Shu Uemura Sheer Lacquer. Red carpet ready! Check out more celebrity braids!
