After NYC’s top designers released their fab fall collections at Fashion Week, the mix masters at ColorProof Evolved Color Care assessed some of the best hairstyles on the catwalks and provided the perfect product blends to re-create the looks in the salon. An all-around favorite style—full, glossy, “mink coat” layers—came off the Diane Von Furstenberg runway, and the lush locks are sure to be a hit with clients. To get the look, combine equal parts ColorProof CrazySmooth PlushLocks Leave-In Smooth to combat frizz, condition hair and reduce blow dry time, and HeatProof Anti Frizz Blow Dry Crème to protect hair and haircolor from thermal damage. Work the cocktail through damp hair. Beginning at the nape, dry subsections with a large round brush and blow-dryer, creating lift at the roots and curving the ends. Direct all strands away from the face. Once hair is dry, twirl vertical sections around a large-barrel curling iron. Cool, brush through lightly and mist with AllAround Flexible Hold Hairspray. Get four more of-the-moment product cocktails and styling how-tos!

    •    Will Ombré Stay?

Posted by behindthechair.com - Daily Dose » Trend Watch on 01.18.13 0 comments

Although the world did not end in 2012, some stylists wish that high-contrast ombré could have been wiped off the map. Ted Gibson, owner of Ted Gibson Salons is not a fan of the “need to get your roots done” look and sees something new on the horizon: “The new haircolor trend will be gradient color, which is a much more subtle and soft shading effect.” Rona O’Connor, celebrity colorist and owner of Lukaro Salon in Beverly Hills agrees that extreme ombré has had its day in the sun, and that a more understated version will take center stage this year, “I see extreme ombré phasing out, as it has been overkill. The look will go back to a prettier “sun-flicked” accent (á la Gisele Bundchen).” Janine Jarman, Sebastian Professional Lead Stylist, suggests that ombré doesn’t have to stick to its traditional brown to blonde graduation in the New Year. Instead, she suggests, “how about red to orange to yellow?”

The Goldwell Artistic Team created a cutting-edge variation for a contemporary “Doris Day” look by using the new, bold shades from the Topchic MaxReds line on a classic bob. Every stylist knows that extensions add length, but today there are many new products and services that can provide a wide-range of hair-freeing solutions for clients, like adding color! Color rules pop culture. The hottest celebrities regularly jump on and off color du jour bandwagons regularly. Some adventurous clients will head straight to the color department for a makeover inspired by their favorite celeb, but for many who want to experiment, the permanent nature of color is a turn-off. Riawna Capri and Nikki Lee, co-owners of the Hollywood salon Nine Zero One, satisfy clients’ color cravings with Great Lengths 3D FX Extensions. “Bright colors in hair are all the rage right now,” they say. “Many clients have been coming in for colorful chunks of extensions. It’s a great way to change up your look without coloring and damaging your own hair.” Want to cash in? Display sample strands in your color department to help cue the conversation between a timid client and her stylist. And listen carefully for clues! Did the subject of Nicky Minaj’s hot pink ends come up in casual conversation? Take note and show her how a few pink extensions can “Minaj” her own natural strands in no time! Get 4 celebrity hair how-tos from Great Lengths!

    •    Glamorous Grunge

Posted by behindthechair.com - Daily Dose » Trend Watch on 10.23.12 0 comments

Even though Fashion Week ended months ago, the looks we saw were all about predicting spring’s next big trend, so we’ll be exploring and learning as much as we can from the catwalks from now until February. One look we’re loving came from the Prabal Gurung show. Prabal is one to watch in the fashion world, so any beauty look from that show is sure to be a hit, too! Paul Hanlon for OSiS by Schwarzkopf Professional was on hand to create the look and said it was all about modern grunge.
“The look is very nineties but also has a Sissy Spacek seventies vibe,” he said of his center-parted, sleek, “not over-done” look that “imparts a naivety to her, but is still a little bit dangerous.” To get the look, he created a center part on damp hair then worked OSiS Grip Extreme Hold Mousse into the roots section by section. Next, he blow dried the hair very straight using OSiS Buff Light Styling Cream. Once dry, he applied several pumps of OSiS Magic Anti-frizz Shine Serum from mid-length to ends to create separation and shine, then sealed the look with OSiS Elastic Flexible Hold Hairspray. Get three more styling how-tos from OSiS by Schwarzkopf Professional!

    •    Pony Tales

The ponytail is back…and it’s better than ever. It’s becoming a go-to style for the fashion elite—John Barrett recently opened Barrett’s Ponytail Bar in his chic New York salon, for instance—and if we learned one thing at Spring/Summer 2013 Fashion Week, it’s that the trendy-again style will be sticking around for a while. On the runways, hairdressers got creative and updated the basic pony in myriad ways—high, low, textured, neat, shiny, matte—so there was literally a pony for every fashion personality. At Marc Jacobs, Redken Creative Consultant Guido created an Edie-Sedgwick 1960s-inspired pony with a teased, tousled finish. “This is a styled-then-slept-in look,” he says. “The height around the face is enough to highlight the features, but is not over-the-top.” Guido created the show-stopping  volume and texture with his Fashion Week go-to product—Redken quick tease 15. See more variations on the ponytail from Fashion Week!

    •    Like a Moth to a Flame, We’re Drawn to this Hair

For his spring 2013 collection, designer Bibhu Mohapatra found inspiration in the transformative powers of the lunar moth and its springtime emergence from the cocoon. His designs were filled with bold colors and graphic, wing-like patterns that called for a clean but unexpected hairstyle. L’Oréal Professionnel Portfolio Artist Amit Abraham created just that—fashioning a strong, clean shape in front and an interlacing fishtail bun in back. To get the look, Amit created a dramatic center part then sprayed L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil Reinforcing Milk at the roots to reinforce and flatten the part. He pulled each section into a low ponytail then worked L’Oréal Professionnel True Grip Powder through the lengths for hold and texture. He then created neat fishtail braids, weaving them together and working them into a cocoon-like shape at the nape. He finished with L’Oréal Professionnel Freezing Mist for shine and hold. “The unexpected shape of the rectangular bun commands attention,” says Amit. See another NYFW hair look—the structured, graphic knot!

In our eyes, you can do no wrong with a French twist. The classic ‘do lends itself to myriad interpretations, like this editorial version from the team at Oribe. Using the Oribe Fiber Groom Elastic Texture Paste, they whipped this look up in a flash. To create the style, take a finger-full of Fiber Groom and work it into the hair with your fingers, beginning at the hairline and then working it into the lengths. Direct the hair upwards to create volume. Gather all the hair together and pull into back into a ponytail then twist it into a French twist shape, tucking the ends of the hair into the twist. To finish, pin the hair into place with one or two long pins then shape any strays with your fingers. The goal here is not perfection, so don’t be intimidated by a little texture or messiness. Get 11 celebrity hair how-tos from Oribe’s Vanity Fair cover shoot!

For her recent stint on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar, actress Penelope Cruz channeled the ’80s with super voluminous locks. Oribe, who created the look, said, “I wanted to do something atypical, so I cut about two inches off her hair, which she loved. I wanted her hair to be reminiscent of the 1980s with lots of volume. It was nice to do something different that really pops on newsstands.” Here’s how Oribe created Penelope’s luscious look:

      1. Apply Curl By Definition with fingers, keeping the hair’s movement as natural as possible.

      2. Blow-dry hair with a diffuser and then smooth bangs to bring softness to the front of the hair. Spot-dry it wherever you want it straighter and smoother.

      3. Curl sections with a 1-inch curling iron.

      4. Finish with Impermèable Anti-Humidity Spray for shine and control.

Now, meet Oribe’s new campaign star Sandy Poirier!
