Your eternally brunette client finally took your suggestion to become a sultry redhead. One of your blonde clients embraced her inner Fergie and asked you to deepen her strands to a rich brunette hue. Haircolor transformations are well and good…until clients reach for their makeup bags. Suddenly, those shadows, blushes and lipsticks don’t seem quite right. New hues often require a new makeup palette. Kevin Givens, International Cosmetic Director for TIGI, offers makeup makeover tips for each shade. Blondes, Kevin says, can wear more colors than most women, but he prefers a modern palette with a clean, sophisticated eye and a tart pink lip. Redheads will take center stage in shades of purple and wine, he says. “Concentrate color on the lids below the crease for a subtle, peek-a-boo effect,” he suggests. Often, brunettes feel like they have no color options when it comes to makeup. “So not true!” Kevin says. “The palettes just aren’t as obvious.” Try using a bold blue in a brand new way for a modern touch. 1960s British rockers-meets-India was the theme behind the Timo Weiland Fall/Winter collection. Timo and co-designer Alan Eckstein said they were inspired by an idea that they had of Gloria Vanderbilt and Keith Richards coming back from Colonial India in the ‘60s, and the inspiration came through in both the hair and the makeup. Makeup master Napoleon Perdis worked on creating a modernized Indian princess makeup look in a washed-out palette of gold, cream and alabaster shades. As for hair, the look had a decidedly undone feel with plenty of fashion-forward natural texture. Co-owner of the chic-and-sustainable ION studio in New York City Leonardo Manetti created a “messy, but not too messy” look with a deep, secured side part. Hair was straightened with just a little bit of texture left in and was finished with Davines Defining Creative Moulding Foam, Defining Gloss, and Invisible Hair Spray. Celebrate sustainable salons! Spring must be on the way! Stars rocked a little seasonal color inspiration at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, opting for high-impact, bold lip colors. Claire Danes, who snagged a trophy that night, punctuated her dark Louis Vuitton dress with a stunning, hot pink pout (possibly a signature look for her). Amber Riley kicked her look up a notch in a bright, flirty fuchsia shade while her Glee costar Jenna Ushkowitz chose a shimmering bright magenta to offset her peach Badgley Mischka gown. Jenna’s makeup artist Patrick de Fontbrune said he first used Lucas Papaw Ointment to moisturize her pout then he lined and filled the entire lip with MAC lip pencil in Redd. He completed her bold, bright lip with MAC Dare to Wear lip-gloss in “Bold and Brash.” Love this? Now check out Olivia Wilde’s makeup from the Golden Globes!
