With her mega-sized voice and now a mega-sized trophy case for all those new Grammys, it’s only natural that Adele completes her look with mega-sized, voluminous locks. The singing sensation single-handedly brought big hair back, and we can’t get enough of her style; she always looks classy, feminine and downright lovely. To create an Adele-inspired ‘do on your client, roll sections of hair onto hot rollers, starting at the top of the head. Spray each section with hairspray and allow the rollers to cool. Once cool, remove the rollers, create a deep center part, then brush the curls out to create waves. If your client needs a little boost in the volume department, recommend extensions! A basic rule of thumb for applying extensions to create believable volume, says Great Lengths Technical Director Celeste Lucero, is to add 3 to 5 rows at the sides, 2 to 5 rows at the nape and 2 to 5 rows at the perimeter. Curl Up
Category: [ Trend Watch ]
At the LA premiere of her new flick New Year’s Eve, Hilary Swank looked beautiful in a glittering blue gown and cascading curls. Her hairstyle, created by Robert Vetica, celebrity stylist and Moroccanoil Global Brand Ambassador, was glamorous, sexy and spirited—everything we look for in a New Year’s Eve look. Create the look by prepping damp hair with Moroccanoil Treatment then create a deep side part and dry in large sections. Use a ¾-inch curling iron on the hair behind the ear. In the back, take larger sections and direct the curl down, making sure not to spiral the hair on the barrel. Continue around to the other side behind the ear. At the top of the part, take 2½-inch sections and curl in the opposite direction. Pin these sections along the front hairline and spray with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray. Allow the spray to sit for a bit then release the pins and brush out. Pull the hair on the parted side back and to the side and pin in place with bobby pins and a hair comb. Work Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream into the remaining hair with your fingers to frame it around the face then finish with more hairspray. View this entire step-by-step! -
Making Waves

The perfect party style for any of your client’s holiday happenings is luminous, romantic waves. These gleaming locks are a chic, elegant look for any special occasion and Leonardo Mannetti for L’Oreal Professionnel gave us the scoop on how to make waves. First, prep towel-dried hair with L’Oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil and then apply Texture Expert Mousse Volupte from roots to ends. Dry hair smooth, concentrating on the root area, then lightly spray hair with Texture Expert Infinium 2 hairspray to provide a workable, moveable hold. Wrap large sections around the outside of a 1-inch curling iron away from the face to create soft movement. Work curled sections of hair into loose rings (about 1 inch in diameter), but leave the ends out and secure with pins to create volume. Mist hair with Texture Expert Infinium 3 hairspray. Remove pins and loosely separate curls with your fingers. Accent pieces of hair with Texture Expert Perfect Shimmer for a holiday shine. Win a full-sized sample of L’Oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil! -

Joico International Artistic Director Damien Carney’s collections are inspiring and trendsetting works of art. He is successful at bringing his vision to life because he looks at the big picture, communicates effectively with his photographer and imagines what each hairstyle will look like through the lens of a camera. Damien is also cognizant of the amount of product he uses on the hair and only uses enough to get the job done. Use too much and the hair will look stiff and phony on camera, he says. When creating your own works of art, Damien advises to start slowly and apply your product lightly. Remember, you can always add more but once you’ve applied too much, it’s hard to go back. Also, it’s often necessary to restyle the hair many times during a shoot, so be sure the hair is never too solid or stiff to manipulate, which can happen if you apply too much styling product or hairspray at one time. If you keep these tips in mind then your collections may one day grace the pages of behindthechair.com On Paper too! Win a FREE Joico J-Cut DVD featuring Damien Carney! -
Hopeless Romantic
TIGI Catwalk was all over the place at Spring Fashion Week, and the TIGI team created tons of inspiring looks. One in particular—a style they whipped up at Maisonette 1977—is a chic, feminine option for the holidays. “The look represents a romantic, European lady with hair that’s loose, undone and pretty,” says DJ Riggs. To create this style on your clients, start by spraying hair at the crown with Your Highness Firm Hold Hairspray to provide thickness and texture, then blow dry. Next, brush the top section back and create a twist in the center of the head to prep the section for loose waves. Separate the hair into layers and spray with Session Series Work It Hairspray, then French braid the hair toward the crown. The braid starts out smaller and tighter, then gets chunkier and looser in the middle, and then becomes tight at the bottom again, giving it a fishtail effect. To finish, spray the braid with Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo for a messier, natural look, then blow dry the braid so it “swells.” Learn the Exaggerated Ponytail how-to from TIGI Catwalk.Category: [ Trend Watch ] -
Turn the Volume Upside-Down

From Catwalk by TIGI’s Young Royals collection, this style turns volume upside-down! Create some mad majestic volume of your own by working Catwalk by TIGI Your Highness Thickening Gel Crème into the roots and midlengths. Blast dry with your fingers. Next, create a low side part and start a hot roller set at the front of the head. Using medium-sized rollers and relatively large sections, spray with Your Highness Hairspray and roll forward and to the left. On the other side of the head, work the same way, placing the rollers in a circular pattern. The key to this look is flatness on the top with volume and width at the ends, so instead of rolling straight to the root, clip each roller at the midlengths. Only roll the bottom sections all the way up. Switch to smaller rollers in the back for a stronger curl. Spray all the rollers with hairspray and allow to cool, then brush out the hair section-by-section. Brush the hair out and away from itself to create width. As you work towards the front, create a cleaner finish by brushing the hair closer to the head without separating the hair.
