Michelle Obama is quite the trend-setter. She catapulted designer Jason Wu into instant celeb status when she wore his gown to the Inaugural Ball; her arms inspired women everywhere to work out again; and she’s also convinced the world that short layered hair is super chic. Want to create the iconic “Obama” cut on your client? The pros at Mizani say to take a vertical parting at the center nape, hold it at 45-degrees and cut. Work side-to-side and cut with a traveling guide then move up and repeat throughout the entire back. Move to the side and part off a 1-inch horizontal section. Hold it at zero elevation, blending with a portion of the previously-established length guide in back and then point-cut the entire section to establish the side length. Then take a diagonal section at the fringe and point cut to establish the length. Return to the side and work up, taking vertical subsections and cutting to a traveling guide. Repeat steps 2-4 on the opposite side then personalize the fringe with point-cutting. To finish the style, work a pea-sized amount of Mizani Supreme Oil through the hair then blow-dry with a round brush. Digit Discussion
World-famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow this year, and you know what that means—spring is coming early so it’s time to get your digits ready for the season. Shades typically lighten up each spring, but instead of going sheer, this year’s crop of pastels stays rich and creamy—think smooth purples, bright blues, and fresh and yummy neutrals. Here’s a quick guide to the season’s hottest hues: Lovely Lavender—Purple nails are this season’s secret weapon. No matter the shade, purple looks great with every skin tone. Nice is Nice from Essie’s spring collection is a supremely happy spring wisteria color. Blue’s Clues—Whether you choose a shade of Tiffany Box or Robin’s Egg, pale blue absolutely screams spring. Natural Nudes—Neutrals maintain the au natural spring-like feel and look refreshingly demure, just don’t match the nude shade too closely to your client’s skin tone. Instead, opt for a few shades lighter or darker. Try Essie’s Sand Tropez, then kick it up a notch by adding a thin line of a bright color, like nail techs did at Parabal Gurung’s spring show.
