Hair and fashion. Fashion and hair. They go hand in hand. Clients are especially concerned with creating an entire “look” from head to toe come holiday season, what with a plethora of parties they’re slated to attend. Hairdresser Dante Blandshaw says it’s important for a stylist to work hair to maximize a wardrobe. To complement this 1940s-inspired belted jacket, for instance, Dante recommends a new spin on a classic upsweep. “I created soft curls with a barrel iron then pinned them up, making sure not to be overly-neat,” he says. He then created a victory-roll look at the front of the style to give it a vintage feel. “Be cautious about how far you bring the hair down on the forehead,” he adds. “You don’t want to overpower the face.” Get 5 more tips on how to complement fashion with a hairstyle!

When a client is in the mood for a new style, where’s the first place she turns to for inspiration? The pages of US Weekly and Elle or the E! channel, since celebrity style determines just about every fashion decision your clients make. This gorgeous fall cut, as seen on Dianna Agron and January Jones—which we like to call the “shab”—will have your client looking hot as the temperatures cool. It’s a cross between a bob and shag and it truly comes to life when cut and styled properly. Monte Haute, hair department head for Glee, created this look on Dianna using a razor to shape the outline of the cut. “It’s meant to have some jagged lines with lots of movement,” he explains. After the initial shape was finished, Monte used shears to add extra detail, like the piece-y fringe and feature-enhancing layered side pieces. “It’s a great option for women with fine hair that has a little bit of natural texture,” Monte says. He finished the style with Bumble and bumble Defrizz to control flyaways and provide tons of shine. Find out 4 more favorite haircuts for fall!

Every season, we scour the fashion runways with the hope of spotting brilliant new ‘dos and inspiration. And we spotted quite a little gem at the Dolce & Gabbanna show during Milan Fashion Week, where Redken Creative Consultant Guido created a classic twist inspired by Italian actress Sophia Loren. “We pulled the hair loosely back into a French twist and it looks a bit as if the woman was dancing all night,” Guido explains. “It’s effortlessly gorgeous.” To create the look, apply Thickening Lotion 06 to damp hair and rough dry without a brush (to maintain natural texture) until hair is 90 percent dry. Next, apply Tousle Whip 04 Soft Texturizing Cream-Wax throughout the front of the hair to enhance natural movement and let it air dry the last 10 percent. Beginning at the nape of the neck and working upwards, backcomb the hair for added texture. Finger comb hair back away from the face and pull hair back into a French twist, securing with bobby pins. Make sure to keep the hair loose around the face (not pulled back too tight), so you can see the natural movement of the hair texture. Finish with Fashion Work 12 Versatile Working Spray. Check out 5 fashion week hair how-tos from Guido!

    •    A Ball-Worthy Braid

It was a star-studded and incredibly fashionable evening at this year’s The Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala (aka, The Met Ball) in New York City. Celebrities, fashion designers and a handful of supermodels attended the event to strut their stuff and pay homage to the great work and memory of Alexander McQueen. One stand-out style was Rihanna’s double-sided, down-her-back, red hot braid that paired beautifully with her Stella McCartney couture gown. To get the look, FHI Heat VisionMaker and celebrity stylist Ursula Stephen first flat ironed her hair using her FHI Heat Runway iron. “The iron makes the hair soft and manageable,” explained Ursula. She then split the hair into two sections, corn rowed the left side and secured it with a pin, and then corn rowed the right side and connected the two. To keep the look in place, Ursula applied Motions Hold and Shine Styling Spray. To tidy up the hairline and prevent fly-aways, Ursula applied a shine-enhancing pomade. Get six more Met Ball styling how-tos!

We could’ve sworn we heard Donna Summer playing while we watched Sunday night’s Grammy Awards. We spotted a 1970s flair in lots of the hair looks—like on Miranda Lambert, Hillary Scott and Lea Michele—and it’s no surprise since fashion is seeing a strong 70s influence resurging in a big way for spring. We asked our Pureology PureArtist BFFs Natasha Sunshine, April Webster, Darren Pena and Sandra Joseph for the scoop on this 70s hair revival. “From soft waves and curls to long, hippie-length hair to simple ponytails, great hair rocked the red carpet,” they said. To achieve Miranda’s cool 1970s waves, they suggest spraying a heat styler like Pureology ColourStylist FortifyingHeatSpray in damp hair, then drying completely. Next, twist varying-sized square sections down the length of an iron then secure with single prong clips to cool. Remove the clips and work a pea-sized amount of hair polish through your hands and break up the curls with your fingertips. Finish with hairspray and you’re Grammy ready! Check out more 70s-inspired Grammy hair trends!
