With her mega-sized voice and now a mega-sized trophy case for all those new Grammys, it’s only natural that Adele completes her look with mega-sized, voluminous locks. The singing sensation single-handedly brought big hair back, and we can’t get enough of her style; she always looks classy, feminine and downright lovely. To create an Adele-inspired ‘do on your client, roll sections of hair onto hot rollers, starting at the top of the head. Spray each section with hairspray and allow the rollers to cool. Once cool, remove the rollers, create a deep center part, then brush the curls out to create waves. If your client needs a little boost in the volume department, recommend extensions! A basic rule of thumb for applying extensions to create believable volume, says Great Lengths Technical Director Celeste Lucero, is to add 3 to 5 rows at the sides, 2 to 5 rows at the nape and 2 to 5 rows at the perimeter. Find out the three finalists in the Great Lengths Before & After Imagery Contest!

Say your client is the adventurous type who wants a new look for new year, but has absolutely no idea what she wants. What are you to do? Suggest this updated pixie seen on Ashlee Simpson. With its asymmetrical, swooped fringe in front and shorter lengths in the back, this cut works well for clients of all ages and is particularly stunning on oval and square face shapes, according to our good friend Phillip Wilson. It can also be styled in many ways, and gives the stylist the option to customize each cut for the client. “This cut is so hot right now because it’s so versatile” he adds. “The key to this look is to create a soft, flirty and feathered texture rather than solid lines. Cut into the perimeter to customize the shape and create details to highlight your client’s best features.” For a flawless finish, Phillip recommends using Pureology Nano Glaze Styling Cream to piece out or smooth the texture, depending on your desired result. Check out Pureology’s new packaging and initiatives!

The perfect party style for any of your client’s holiday happenings is luminous, romantic waves. These gleaming locks are a chic, elegant look for any special occasion and Leonardo Mannetti for L’Oreal Professionnel gave us the scoop on how to make waves. First, prep towel-dried hair with L’Oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil and then apply Texture Expert Mousse Volupte from roots to ends. Dry hair smooth, concentrating on the root area, then lightly spray hair with Texture Expert Infinium 2 hairspray to provide a workable, moveable hold. Wrap large sections around the outside of a 1-inch curling iron away from the face to create soft movement. Work curled sections of hair into loose rings (about 1 inch in diameter), but leave the ends out and secure with pins to create volume. Mist hair with Texture Expert Infinium 3 hairspray. Remove pins and loosely separate curls with your fingers. Accent pieces of hair with Texture Expert Perfect Shimmer for a holiday shine. Win a full-sized sample of L’Oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil!

    •    Do You Want To Shag, Baby?

When a client is in the mood for a new style, where’s the first place she turns to for inspiration? The pages of US Weekly and Elle or the E! channel, since celebrity style determines just about every fashion decision your clients make. This gorgeous fall cut, as seen on Dianna Agron and January Jones—which we like to call the “shab”—will have your client looking hot as the temperatures cool. It’s a cross between a bob and shag and it truly comes to life when cut and styled properly. Monte Haute, hair department head for Glee, created this look on Dianna using a razor to shape the outline of the cut. “It’s meant to have some jagged lines with lots of movement,” he explains. After the initial shape was finished, Monte used shears to add extra detail, like the piece-y fringe and feature-enhancing layered side pieces. “It’s a great option for women with fine hair that has a little bit of natural texture,” Monte says. He finished the style with Bumble and bumble Defrizz to control flyaways and provide tons of shine. Find out 4 more favorite haircuts for fall!

    •    Naturaltech Wise prescriptions Natural Solutions

Davines’ “Sustainable Beauty” is not a mere proposal, but a tangible element resting on specific pillars: Nature, Mankind and Technology. The harmony between these elements gives rise to a profound wisdom in the use of resources, a sensitivity towards true human needs, and the ability to combine performance and wellbeing through innovation and the search for solutions that are increasingly more connected to the natural world.
All this is NATURALTECH, a complete program of curative solutions for all hair and scalp problems that brings together formulas inspired by naturalness and safety with special methods of use involving hairdresser and client in a true wellbeing journey.
The renovation principles are rigorous: simplicity, performance, pleasantness and design.

      Simplicity
Maintaining the division into families dedicated to different problems, the new NATURALTECH range develops into 7 specific directions (ENERGIZING, NOURISHING, PURYFYING, REBALANCING, DETOXYFYING, WELL BEING and the brand new CALMING, dedicated to sensitive scalp problems) with an assortment optimised in performances and ease of use, and the possibility of combining the various treatments according to the needs.
For this reason and for the first time, Davines presents its 4 Superactive: hyperactive concentrates that ensure exceptional problem-specific performances. A priceless resource to favour the hairstylists’ work, underlining their professional competence and simplifying problem-specific solutions.

      Performance
The formula has been revolutionised with the introduction of new active ingredients, in particular phytoceuticals: exclusively vegetable organic components with a very high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-free radical power, so far only used in the food sector.  In this all-natural prospect, substances like SLES, SLS and parabens have been eliminated.

      Pleasantness
The products’ sensory approach has been enhanced to make it more sophisticated and decisive through textures extremely pleasant to the touch, such as softer foams, and using refined essential oils distilled from aromatic herbs that enrich the sense of naturalness and wellbeing by improving the products’ performance.
A pleasure to be discovered also through the 3 new massages, tailor-made for a multi-cultural approach that wisely combines East and West in a simplified and shortened version that does not at all subtract effectiveness and relaxation to the client.   A 360° sensory experience that optimises the cosmetic effect contributing to the elimination of daily stress.

      Design
The development of a straightforward and non-conventional communication enhances all the characteristics of the NATURALTECH line by adding a strong appeal to the eyes of professionals and end consumers.
The hand-made drawings are the line’s soul and express through unprecedented symbols the concept of union between mankind, nature and technology.  Each family is characterised by a drawing with a specific symbolic value that makes every proposal increasingly more attractive:
Energizing: the dragon is an allegory for strength and vitality.
NOURISHING: wheat fields are the emblem of nutrition
PURIFYING: snow covered mountains are the symbol of purity
      REBALANCING: a scale expressing balance
DETOXIFYING: flying cities, ideal meeting places for mankind and nature
WELLBEING: Birds are the sentries of the health of the environment
CALMING: Banyan tree are the oriental symbol of meditation

The line’s packaging draws inspiration from ancient pharmacy, as a symbol of accurate artisan research linked to the natural world, recalled by amber colour bottles in light plastic or glass, which ensures product preservation whilst minimising environmental impact. Boxes, in FSC certified recycled paper, free from glue, paint and ink, highly biodegradable, in line with the same sustainability concept.

With the leaves changing and clients considering a change of their own, Matrix Artistic Designer Franco Della Grazia recently shared a few of his fall color predictions to help prepare you for the season. According to his forecast, cool ash brown shades are going to be extremely popular for brunette clients, especially those who want to darken things up without a red reflect. He also feels henna services will be a big request, so make sure to familiarize yourself with this service since more and more clients are adamant that their colorist use ammonia-free, peroxide-free haircolor. Do you have a client with a disheveled bob? Consider taking her to the end of the spectrum. “A delicate, soft black end result is a look I see repeated each and every fall,” he shares. “It looks stunning on a disheveled bob because both are strong and sleek.” For a soft, smokey black, use 1 oz. 3N Color Sync + 1 oz. 4A + 2 oz. 9Volume Color Sync activator. The end result will enhance the cut and keep your client looking on-trend. Get 8 more fall color predictions!

Your eternally brunette client finally took your suggestion to become a sultry redhead. One of your blonde clients embraced her inner Fergie and asked you to deepen her strands to a rich brunette hue. Haircolor transformations are well and good…until clients reach for their makeup bags. Suddenly, those shadows, blushes and lipsticks don’t seem quite right. New hues often require a new makeup palette. Kevin Givens, International Cosmetic Director for TIGI, offers makeup makeover tips for each shade. Blondes, Kevin says, can wear more colors than most women, but he prefers a modern palette with a clean, sophisticated eye and a tart pink lip. Redheads will take center stage in shades of purple and wine, he says. “Concentrate color on the lids below the crease for a subtle, peek-a-boo effect,” he suggests. Often, brunettes feel like they have no color options when it comes to makeup. “So not true!” Kevin says. “The palettes just aren’t as obvious.” Try using a bold blue in a brand new way for a modern touch. Cocktailing products is a huge timesaver for stylists, especially those who have clients on the constant go, go, go. All it takes is a dollop of THIS, two pumps of THAT and a spritz of THIS and you’re ready to shake, rattle and roll your client’s hair into absolute styling perfection. A big fan of “shaking things up” is our pint-sized friend Janine Jarman, who has the perfect recipe for creating a “Foxy Lady” in the salon. “For a big and foxy finish, I wash and condition hair with Sebastian Professional Volupt Shampoo and Conditioner to enhance natural volume,” she explains. “I towel dry hair and then spritz Sebastian Professional Volupt Spray from roots to ends for thermal protection and added lift. I then apply Sebastian Professional Mousse Forte from mid-shaft to ends, then add a drop of Sebastian Professional Liquid Gloss to the ends only for polished finish. Blow-dry while styling with a round brush.” Get 18 more cocktailing recipes!

These days, pixie haircuts are all the rage in Hollywood thanks to celebs like Hayden Panettiere and Michelle Williams. The cut is stylish, practical and easy-going, especially during the dog days of summer. Styling these cute coifs can be tricky, but Redken Expert and Celebrity Runway Stylist Rodney Cutler for ULTA shares a styling how-to that will keep your client’s pixie looking on-point and paparazzi-ready. On damp hair, apply Redken rough paste 12 working material with your fingers to ensure even distribution. Next, grab your diffuser and create a textured base by twisting and twirling the hair around your fingers as you blow dry. Before the hair is completely dry, pinch and twist the ends to create additional separation and texture. Once hair is completely dry and styled, use more Redken rough paste 12 and pinch and twist the dry tips again for longer-lasting control and finish. See the entire how-to!
