Long-locked ladies like Maya Rudolph, Stacy Keibler and Kelly Osbourne were beside themselves (hah!) at the Oscars, opting for stunning side-swept waves and curls. With its popularity on the red carpet, this over-the-shoulder look is sure to be a hit come bridal and prom season because it’s a great way to show off a gown while still making a strong beauty statement. To create this Oscar-worthy wave, apply a styling cream to damp hair from roots to ends. Blowdry the hair with a round brush to ensure a smooth, polished finish. Once the hair is completely dry, create a deep side part. Starting at the back of the head, use a styling iron like the domed FHI Heat Platform Iron to twist sections of hair all in one direction. Pull all the curled hair over the shoulder opposite from the deep side part to complete the modern yet Old Hollywood glam style. Check out the Platform series irons from FHI Heat!

A Nod to the Past

One thing we absolutely love about award season is seeing what trends are gracing the red carpet, and we couldn’t help but notice how stunning Parks and Recreations star Aubrey Plaza looked with her 1940s-inspired waves. Hairstylist David Gardner was responsible for creating her old Hollywood, glamourous look. Inspired by her gorgeous dress and Golden Era starlets like Marlene Dietrich and Carole Lombard, David first applied styling mousse to her damp hair. He then dried her hair most of the way using his fingers, then switched to a round brush at the top and sides of her hair to add volume and to keep it smooth around her face for a more contemporary feel. Once the hair was completely dry, he curled sections in tight corkscrews on a 1-inch iron from root to the tip, leaving the ends straight. Once all the hair was curled and completely cooled, he raked his fingers through to break up the curls. He then styled the front over her eye and applied a shine-enhancing hairspray to lock in the look and keep the hair looking radiant and reflective throughout the evening. Get more Emmy how-tos! -
Effortless Twist
Boho braids are hot for summer, and Blake Lively is here as proof. She sported this fun, textured version on the red carpet for the premiere of Green Lantern recently and it complemented her summery Chanel Haute Couture dress perfectly. To create the look, Blake’s stylist Rod Ortega started by applying Philip B Beach Mist and Shu Uemura Silk Mesh on Blake’s wet hair. Next, he dried her hair with a diffuser to get a beach-wave texture, then curled random strands of hair with a ½-inch curling iron and pinned her hair to the side. Rod gave the look a boho-chic finish by fishtail-braiding part of her hair and gave it an all-over sheen with Shu Uemura Sheer Lacquer. Red carpet ready! Check out more celebrity braids!

From the fall catwalks to this year’s red carpet at the Academy Awards (think Natalie Portman), a trend that continues to gain momentum is ‘40s-inspired finger-waves. Joining the lineup of young starlets to don this glamorous look was Reese Witherspoon while promoting her new movie. We cannot get enough of her May 2011 Vogue cover! Her hair looks absolutely picture perfect. To create those Water for Elephant waves, you’ll need a curling iron and some serious styling skills, but also products that pack a punch. Suddenly, “cocktailing” becomes your new best friend. “My favorite cocktail for smooth locks with body definition is what I like to call the Star Express Treatment,” says Doug Martucci, ProRituals Global Artistic Director. “I start by detangling the hair with ProRituals Spray Treat. I then combine ProRituals Dream Cream Leave-In Styling Conditioner with some ProRituals Radiance Serum and ProRituals Smooth Straight Balm. This cocktail, coupled with a Marilyn Double S Pro brush and finished with a little ProRituals Light Play (for a touchable hold) is what makes my client feel like she’s ready to walk the red carpet.” Share your product “cocktail” and win FREE ProRituals Stylers & Finishers! -

We could’ve sworn we heard Donna Summer playing while we watched Sunday night’s Grammy Awards. We spotted a 1970s flair in lots of the hair looks—like on Miranda Lambert, Hillary Scott and Lea Michele—and it’s no surprise since fashion is seeing a strong 70s influence resurging in a big way for spring. We asked our Pureology PureArtist BFFs Natasha Sunshine, April Webster, Darren Pena and Sandra Joseph for the scoop on this 70s hair revival. “From soft waves and curls to long, hippie-length hair to simple ponytails, great hair rocked the red carpet,” they said. To achieve Miranda’s cool 1970s waves, they suggest spraying a heat styler like Pureology ColourStylist FortifyingHeatSpray in damp hair, then drying completely. Next, twist varying-sized square sections down the length of an iron then secure with single prong clips to cool. Remove the clips and work a pea-sized amount of hair polish through your hands and break up the curls with your fingertips. Finish with hairspray and you’re Grammy ready!
