Everyone’s doing the lob—a longer, swingy version of the bob. To create a quick, perfectly beveled lob line, Alterna Global Creative Director Michael Shaun Corby suggests this cool technique using the Alterna-tive Styling Band: Begin by applying Alterna Bamboo Style Flexible Control Gel to damp hair, then blow dry. “Freestyle produces a ‘raincoat’ of protection against humidity,” says Michael Shaun. Next, comb all strands with a small-tooth comb. Double or triple the Alterna-tive Styling Band (depending on the size of your client’s neck) and slip it over her head, letting it fall loosely. Gently lift the hair just above the band with your comb to create the bevel shape. Angle the shear so the lower blade is pointed upward and the top blade is pointed downward, then cut the hair from side to side underneath the band. Enter to WIN the entire Alterna Bamboo Style Collection!

When a client is in the mood for a new style, where’s the first place she turns to for inspiration? The pages of US Weekly and Elle or the E! channel, since celebrity style determines just about every fashion decision your clients make. This gorgeous fall cut, as seen on Dianna Agron and January Jones—which we like to call the “shab”—will have your client looking hot as the temperatures cool. It’s a cross between a bob and shag and it truly comes to life when cut and styled properly. Monte Haute, hair department head for Glee, created this look on Dianna using a razor to shape the outline of the cut. “It’s meant to have some jagged lines with lots of movement,” he explains. After the initial shape was finished, Monte used shears to add extra detail, like the piece-y fringe and feature-enhancing layered side pieces. “It’s a great option for women with fine hair that has a little bit of natural texture,” Monte says. He finished the style with Bumble and bumble Defrizz to control flyaways and provide tons of shine. Find out 4 more favorite haircuts for fall!

With the leaves changing and clients considering a change of their own, Matrix Artistic Designer Franco Della Grazia recently shared a few of his fall color predictions to help prepare you for the season. According to his forecast, cool ash brown shades are going to be extremely popular for brunette clients, especially those who want to darken things up without a red reflect. He also feels henna services will be a big request, so make sure to familiarize yourself with this service since more and more clients are adamant that their colorist use ammonia-free, peroxide-free haircolor. Do you have a client with a disheveled bob? Consider taking her to the end of the spectrum. “A delicate, soft black end result is a look I see repeated each and every fall,” he shares. “It looks stunning on a disheveled bob because both are strong and sleek.” For a soft, smokey black, use 1 oz. 3N Color Sync + 1 oz. 4A + 2 oz. 9Volume Color Sync activator. The end result will enhance the cut and keep your client looking on-trend. Get 8 more fall color predictions!

    •    Quick Change

When it comes to their hair, celebs are the ultimate quick change artists. One day their locks are cropped—a week later, they’re long and flowing. For an instant short-to-long makeover, celebrities rely on extensions, which was exactly what Christina Ricci did when she tired of her chin-length bob. Stylists Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri of Nine Zero One salon in West Hollywood, California got busy and applied a full head of Great Lengths extensions for the star, completing the look with UNITE after care products. They began by sectioning the hair and applying the extensions strand-by-strand at the base of the nape. They continued sectioning the hair and applying the extensions, working up to the crown. Next, they determined the desired perimeter line and texturized the extensions to blend with the natural hair. Christina requested a mid-length, naturally blended cut with a fringe. To style, they sprayed the surface of the hair lightly with UNITE Shina-Mist for weightless shine. Finally, they flat ironed strands, keeping the iron an adequate distance from the bonds since heat can cause them to loosen. Enter to WIN 2 tickets to Unite Global Sessions in San Diego!

Trends come and go and change on a regular basis, especially when it comes to hairstyles. Take the bob, for example. Hair pros claim that this season, the A-line bob is definitely on the way out as fans of Victoria Beckham’s once insanely popular cut have waned. But don’t fret, because a new version of the bob has taken its place—the Box bob! While the A-line version has a severe angle running short-to-long from the nape to the sides, the box version is (you guessed it!) boxier, with a design line that’s the same from back to front. It has no angle and runs parallel to the floor for a clean, classic “Louise Brooks” shape. The key to this cut is a clean, shiny finish so prep towel-dried hair with Macadamia Healing Oil Spray then blow-dry with a Denman brush following the shape of the head for a smooth, sleek finish. Finish with another mist of Healing Oil Spray. Get a FREE Sample of Macadamia Oil!

Michelle O. Rihanna. Keira Knightley. Katie Holmes. Victoria Beckham. Jennifer Aniston…and the list goes on. At some point, all of these ladies have fallen in love with the bob, a cut that was first made famous in the 1920s and given new life by Vidal Sassoon in the ‘60s. According to NYC hair guru Sam Brocato, the bob will never go out of style. “We keep it fresh and new with different color and textures,” he says. “But it has to be done right!” Here are a few tricks from Sam to ensure this classic style looks classy, every time. Proportion is everything: height, weight, body proportions, size of forehead, length of neck and face shape; they all matter! For petite girls, a shorter, more angular shape works best. Conversely, this approach wouldn’t cut it on someone with different proportions. Any texture can be “bobbed;” even the finest hair. The caveat? Ladies with fine hair should have a very blunt cut in the back. Maintain your client’s bob by scheduling her appointments every 8-10 weeks. “Bobs are quite low-maintenance,” Sam says. “They’re great for clients with busy lifestyles.” Check out the classic bob step-by-step from Sassoon Academy!

    •    Davines Infinite Variety

Posted by Davines News on 04.28.10 0 comments

The Infinite Variety collection, created in collaboration with Tim Hartley, draws inspiration from some of the great artists to create a series of iconic images in which colour is the undisputed protagonist.
The first reference the latest Davines collection gets inspiration from is the use of colour that made Andy Warhol so famous. Who can’t remember that famous picture of Marylin Monroe reproduced in umpteen colour combinations? The second inspiration is from the Bauhaus with its shape and colour symbolism.  Tim Hartley refers to this concept when he says: “I wanted the cut to be a neutral yet characterising canvas for subsequent technical work, showing the fusion between geometry and the power of colour”. His muse is Louise Brooks who made the bob famous in the 20s, a versatile, feminine and always modern cut; just like Charlotte Perriand, immortalised with a marvellous bob on an LC4 chaise longue by Le Corbusier.
Infinite Variety proposes a number of pictures of the model where colour is the main protagonist: from the first in black and white with her natural hair colour, to the next in a romantic pastel blonde.
Then punk pink turns the model into a Young Rebel while pure red gives us her a “film star” version and elegant brown makes her a Femme Fatale.
The last step in this metamorphosis is luminous black, the Urban chic Gothic style’s extreme glamour weapon.
